Scouting for Food
-----February11th and 18th, 2012
· _ The need is great this year! Please consider helping with the largest single food drive in the country. But please follow through if your group signs up!
· This event goes on…Neither rain nor snow nor sleet shall prevent the collections!!! No exceptions. The need does not go away because of weather.
· It is NOT required to distribute bags on February 11. Most units either focus on collecting on the 18th, or you may consider working a store to collect on the 11th.
· Consider working with a store to have a collection station there. Please let us know if you are going to do this. Please do not wait until the last minute to try and do this. Advance planning is critical to make this work.
· Please, please, please plan on dropping off your food at the collection centers on Feb. 18 between 10am and 2:30pm!
· Knocking on doors always helps and is highly encouraged!!!
· If you insist on distributing bags prior to collection, the bags can not be put out before 2/11 and you MUST use this year’s new bags! Please rubber band bags to door knobs…littering is an issue!
· Last year we had 76 units collect almost 63,000 food items for nine food pantries in Gray Owl District.

2012 SCOUTING FOR FOOD GUIDELINES
DUCK CREEK DISTRICT, CIRCLE TEN COUNCIL
COLLECTION DAY _ FEBRUARY 18TH _ 10:00 A. M. _ 2:00 P.M.
1. Wear your Scout uniform.
2. Invite your parents, brothers and sisters to help. Many hands lighten the load!
3. Work in teams. Remind Scouts _ SAFETY FIRST! No Scout should ever be alone.
4. Tell Scouts NOT TO ENTER ANY HOME.
5. Recruit as much adult help as possible. An adult should be assigned to each team of boys (especially Cut Scouts and younger Boy Scouts).
6. It is not recommended to put bags out, but If you are putting bags out, place a 2012 Scouting for Food bag on every door in your assigned area during the week of February 11th _ 18th, but NO earlier than the 11th. More food is almost always collected by knocking on doors. Bags have dates and times so please do not use last year’s bags, if you are going to pre-distribute them.
7. You do not have to put bags out if you plan on going door-to-door on the 18th.
8. If you are planning a drop box, get the facility’s approval. You can decide with them how best to handle. Be sure to explain the Scouting for Food project to them and let them know that all food collected will be kept in our local community.
9. Please pick up bags ONLY on the same streets on which you placed bags.
10. On February 18th, FOOD COLLECTIONS CAN BE IMPROVED BY KNOCKING ON DOORS WHERE BAGS ARE NOT LEFT OUT! Some people plan on donating and simply forget to set their food bag out. If they say they are not donating, be polite, say thank you, wish them a nice day, and leave.
11. Please count all food items before bringing them to the drop off center. Each can, each box, each envelope (such as gravy or drink mixes, etc.) counts as one food item. You will be advised if your drop off location wants the items sorted.
12. Please arrange to deliver all food items to your drop off center NO LATER than 2:00 p.m. on February 18th. If you cannot finish your food collections by that time, please call your drop-off location Chair or us by cell (Mori – 214-497-2136 or David - 214-497-2136).
13. Instructions for the Collection Center Coordinators were emailed and distributed at February roundtable.
14. You can pick up bags at January or February Roundtables. If you need bags after these events, please contact Mori or David
Once again, we wish to extend a big THANK YOU to all our Scouts and volunteer adults. Without you, this project would not be possible. You are not just participating in another Scout service project, but you are giving of yourself to help people in our local communities who need our help. Each and every one of you is making a BIG difference.
THANK YOU,
2012 Scouting For Food Co-chairs, Duck Creek District
